Gastonia Ordinance Opens Door to Deployment of Small Cell Technology

Positions City for Next Generation of Wireless Broadband

The City of Gastonia has passed a local ordinance to bring small cell technology to the city, helping pave the way for the next generation of high-speed wireless services to their residents and businesses.

“As the demand for advanced wireless service continues to grow, with no end in sight, it is essential that communities like ours have the infrastructure to compete with larger cities, whether in North Carolina or across the country,” said Mayor Walker E. Reid, III. “This ordinance is the right approach to help ensure that reliable high-speed wireless capability is available here in Gastonia now and into the future."

The City Council unanimously approved the ordinance last week, establishing procedures wireless providers will follow in deploying small cells in Gastonia.

"Mayor Reid and the City Council are sending a strong, clear message to our industry that Gastonia is a city which welcomes investment in wireless technology to benefit consumers and to drive economic growth,” said Carlos E. Sanchez, AT&T state director of external affairs. “Their leadership, along with the work of the city staff, is helping put Gastonia in a great position to benefit in the 5G economy.”

Small cell technology is an integral building block for 5G, and is critical to ensuring that consumers and businesses continue to enjoy the modern, high-speed connectivity they demand. The shoebox-sized antennas of small cells can be affixed to existing structures such as power poles, buildings and street lights. The size and flexibility of small cells help AT&T target areas with additional capacity in a way that is low profile and unobtrusive.

This technology will enable faster wireless Internet speeds, provide more and targeted network capacity for things like streaming movies or music, and lay the foundation for technologies of the future – such as 5G, smart cities and connected cars and devices.

AT&T invested nearly $1.8 billion in our North Carolina wireless and wired networks during 2015-2017. These investments have helped AT&T deploy more than 3 million strand miles of fiber optics across the state. These investments also drive a wide range of upgrades to reliability, coverage, speed and overall performance for residents and responders.

AT&T is the largest U.S.-based provider of fiber for business services nationwide. Across North Carolina, AT&T covers more than 54,000 business customer locations with high-speed internet services.

1Actual customer speeds may vary. Download speeds are typically up to 940Mbps due to overhead capacity reserved to deliver the data.

2Initial availability limited to select areas. May not be available in your area. Go to https://www.att.com/internet/ to see if you qualify.

3After 12 months, price moves to standard rate of $90/mo.
